Cacao is a superfood that is becoming more of a household name for great health and vitality.

Now, I want to clarify that cacao is very different from cocoa. Why do you ask? While they come from the same source, the difference is the temperature used during processing time.

Cacao is processed at a lower temperature, so the oils and nutrients are still intact. Cocoa is processed at a higher temperature which makes it sweeter in taste. Cacao is more of a bitter/earthy taste. The bitterness of cacao can vary based on the temperature during processing. Cocoa is sweeter which makes it more popular for baking and everyday consumption.

Cacao is indigenous to South America, Africa and parts of the Caribbean. It is very popular in various cultures for culinary and medicinal purposes.

Here are some amazing benefits of cacao:

  • Very high in antioxidants and flavonoids. This is very supportive in brain health.

  • It is a great source of magnesium.

  • Known to increase serotonin levels (also known as our happy hormone).

  • Increases endorphins and oxytocin.

  • Great source of nutrients during pregnancy and post-partum.

  • Has very strong anti-inflammatory properties.

  • A great beverage to have in the evening for a restful sleep.

  • It is known to boost the metabolism and supports the pancreas and sustaining blood sugar levels.

  • A great source of iron.

Cacao has been used for health, skincare and in some cultures, it is used a special beverage for ceremonial purposes. There are so many options in terms of how it can be used and there are so many amazing results. Topically it is great for protecting the skin against oxidative impact. It is so nutrient dense that if consumed in a smoothie, or supplement form, it can leave you feeling full and sustaining energy while having a super relaxing effect.

It is typically available in a bark, nibs, or a powder and available in many health food stores and some grocery chains.

With the cold weather approaching and the holidays, it may be a good time to indulge.

We hope that you do and love it as much as we do!
