My post contentMost of us have experienced when we have to empty our bladder so badly that we feel like we are going to explode. This is a part of the urinary system, and we are going to cover some basics.

The urinary system also known as the urinary tract works as the body’s filtration system. When the urinary system removes toxins and wastes from the body, it comes out as pee (urine). In order to pee, the body must pass this waste through particular organs, ducts and tubes. If there’s a problem at any step in this process, it can affect the ability to urinate normally

The organs in the urinary system are:

  • Two kidneys (blood-filtering organs).

  • Two ureters (ducts that connect the kidneys to the bladder)

  • A bladder (an organ that holds the pee).

  • A urethra (a tube connected to the bladder that allows pee to leave the body).

  • The urinary system filters the blood to get rid of what the body doesn’t need. It is responsible for eliminating substances like extra water, salt, toxins and other waste products.

Different parts of the urinary system perform tasks, including:

  • Filtering blood

  • Separating the toxins you don’t need from the nutrients you do need

  • Storing and carrying pee out of the body

The kidneys are an essential part of filtering the blood. Here’s how the urinary system works:

  • The blood enters each kidney through a lot of small arteries.

  • The kidneys filter the blood, separating toxins from nutrients.

  • Vitamins, minerals, nutrients and proteins return back to the bloodstream.

  • Waste products and pee move from the kidneys through the ureters and to the bladder.

  • The bladder stores the pee until you use the toilet.

  • Pee leaves the body through the urethra.

When the kidneys are not able to process blood, it is called renal failure. When this occurs, a dialysis machine is required to help clean the blood. Once the blood is cleaned, the machine redistributes it to the body.

Ways to keep the urinary system healthy:

  • Drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated will flush out your system and can help you prevent kidney stones and UTIs (Urinary Tract Infections).

  • Eat a balanced diet with particular foods like whole grains, legumes, leafy greens and good fats to keep the system nourished and healthy.

  • Juices like cranberry, pineapple, grape, pomegranate, watermelon and cherry are great to nourish the urinary system.

  • Zinc, Selenium and magnesium are great and essential for a healthy urinary system. B vitamins also aid in keeping the system healthy and strong.

  • Empty your bladder fully. Make sure you let all of your pee out when you use the toilet. A little extra can cause strain or have bacterial properties.

  • Urinate when your bladder is full. Prolonging causes unnecessary strain to the bladder.

  • Exercises that strengthen the pelvic floor are great and helpful for keeping this system toned.

The urinary system plays a critical role in keeping us alive. They are tiny in size but giants in terms of the role they play in our day-to-day wellbeing. There are quite a few preventative options to take care of this system from supplements to teas, eating various foods as well as exercises. If you are unsure where to source various products or information, you can always ask your healthcare provider.
